The joint exhibition “Light Reflecting on Each Other” featuring artists from Ulaanbaatar and Gwangju has officially opened at the National Art Gallery of Mongolia.
The international exhibition project “Cultural City Gwangju,” organized by the Gwangju Museum of Art, has been held since 2015 with the aim of promoting the works of leading Gwangju artists abroad. Over the years, the exhibition has been successfully presented in numerous cities around the world, including Guangzhou (China), San Antonio (USA), Berlin (Germany), Fukuoka (Japan), Turin (Italy), and Bangkok (Thailand), introducing Gwangju’s contemporary art to international audiences. These exhibitions have attracted significant attention from art professionals and enthusiasts alike, receiving widespread acclaim while contributing to the promotion of Gwangju as a city distinguished by its vibrant cultural and artistic identity.
The 2026 edition of “Cultural City Gwangju” is being held in Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia, under the theme “Light Reflecting on Each Other.” The exhibition brings together six Gwangju-based artists working in media art and installation art, alongside six leading representatives of Mongolia’s contemporary visual arts scene. Together, they present more than 30 artworks.
The twelve participating artists explore contemporary social and cultural transformations, urban landscapes, and the inner worlds of individuals through their unique artistic languages. Their works reflect profound personal experiences, memorable moments from everyday life, and inspirations that have shaped their journeys of self-discovery.
Separated by a straight-line distance of 2,176 kilometers and a one-hour time difference, artists from these two cities share compelling stories from their inner worlds through this exhibition.
